What a great review, i would scan it in if i could. the previous favourite hot hatch was the Golf, but this was before the release of the Megane F1, Mazda 3 MPS and XR5. Basically, the XR5 they loved for the superb engine and on-the-limit control, the Megane for its raw feeling and superb handling and chassis, they didnt rate the Astra SRi very well, and hope to have the VXR for a review soon. It basically came down to the Golf and Mazda 3, with the Mazda becoming the new favourite hot hatch! Like the Golf, understated looks and brilliant gearbox/handling combo, but with the Mazda being much much faster in every occurence.

Ford Focus XR5
0-100kmh -- 7.5secs
0-400m -- 15.38 @152,7kmh

VW Golf GTi
0-100kmh -- 7.36secs
0-400m -- 15.28 @153.8kmh

Renault Megane F1
0-100kmh -- 7.11secs
0-400m -- 15.08 @154.6kmh

Mazda3 MPS ( personal fave)
0-100kmh -- 6.61secs
0-400m -- 14.67 @ 157.9kmh

Holden Astra SRi
0-100kmh -- 7.50secs
0-400m -- 15.32 @ 153.3kmh

They mentioned that the times were a little slow because of slightly damp conditions on the day of the comparo, but its all relative The MPS has been timed at a best 0 - 100kmh of 5.8 seconds

Hope you have enjoyed my little thread

Me it has the kind of electronic stability controls seen on the Evo 9 so it can get that mammoth amount of power down successfully and it works. they say it doesnt have the precision of the Golf, but it is significantly quicker through the twisties

this also goes to show that you can have all the power in the world, but its useless if the chassis isnt up to the task of handling it, with the right driver of course

Not badf but lacks the German class of the Golf

Also the Golf is rated as one of the best FWD handling cars ever
