not just using a clay, you should really use some TFR first, if you can be bothered, then clay.
that way you have a fresh clean base to start using your polishes/waxes etc.

Bug & Tar remover should do what your after no problems. I use it myself as i always tend to be left with a bug or two on my bonnet when i wash mine after extended motorway driving. Brings them off no problem.

I use the turtle wax stuff and its good...I have black paint aswell so every mark shows
