Yep I can use my imagination  Already have pics of corsa's with combat wides on and I think the key is how well they are fitted and moulded. Shove em on and you end up with a chav car. As you would with any kit. Have em done right (in this instance by a pro cos I wouldn't know one end from the other) and you can end up with a mint car. Lights for the mo will be a compromise cos I cannot afford morretts just yet (even though I like them). What I won't compromise though, is the kit fitting and spraying of the car or its shoes.
As an aside, the Sri had it's first full service today. Got the gear box and selector checked out too. All fine, nothing mechanically wrong with car just needed some lub on the selector and linkage. Much smoother with gear changing now. well as smooth as a stock corsa can get anyway! Especially when driven my a Mum who's real car is an auto!
As i see it, the whole idea about modding cars is that you create your own masterpiece, to your own likes and specs yes You see something, you like it or not. You ask opinions and you say yes good idea or no, not for me. All you can hope is that at the end of the day you end up with a car YOU like. Cos it sure as hell will be an expensive mistake if you dont.
what you do if you don't like it????? sell it and start again?

The advantage of age and years of experience and a full no claims bonus reaching back over 25 years, is that you know when to drive fast and when not to..... so don't try to teach your mother to suck eggs

Some things to consider...
* Kit WILL crack, chip. They are GRP, not plastic.
* Will your son still enjoy the car in a few years?
* Its dead money. You'll never recoup what you spent.
* Have you tried insurance quotes for a modified SRi on an 18yr old?
But, saying that....
its your money etc.... your choice

Have discussed all of the above with Jay. I took some convincing that this was a) insurable b) safe c) what he really wanted and not just a teenage fad.
Your totally right, it is dead money but it seems to me that modding cars is a little more than being able to recover any investment. Drive a new car off a garage forecourt (the other option) and you can still leave 50% of it's initial investment value behind on the floor. To explain, the total cost of the external mod, the initial purchase of the car and his insurance is all funded by a trust fund so he has had to convince the trustees that this is a key part of his personal development. The reason I am involved with this is that I am one of the trustees, my role is to keep it legal, research any possibly pit falls (things he may not have addressed, thought of ect). The terms and conditions set out by the trustees was that Jay funded the internal mods and engine tweaks himself.... ie gets a job! lol (full time student at mo).
Insurance is bloody awful for a teenage lad anyway (as most of you will know) and yes, we have investigated it and budgeted for it too 
Yep, the kit will chip and he is lucky that he is friends with a damn good bloke when it comes to bodywork repairs.
The biggest suprise I found that I enjoy this malarky, even down to going down to Thunder MFN and seeing the other cars on a Sunday night.

I certainly thought I was the bee's knee's in my kitted corsa when i was that age Dont want to comment on how I'd feel now. Still I must look a bit of an ass driving round in an old 205 GTi covered in stickers
Make sure you get decent progree pics along the way. Could be an interesting wee project 
He is a lucky lad. All I got from my parents at that age was grief for spending money on a car (read wasting my own money).
If I was in the situation above. I would have opted for a nice modern classic (manta, old escort etc etc), and used the 'kit' money restoring it 
Was the corsa his choice?

We have taken some pics of the car when we first bought it, dents an all, got a few more to take yet but we do intend to record its progress (or not) Got its date now for the kit fitting and bodywork moulding and preping...... not sure who is more excited me or him! Sad or what?
As for the car choice..... He gave us trustees the spec, along with quotes for the insurance for that and a few other possible models. He also had to research the reliability ratings of the corsa and any other car he looked at. Corsa came out top Then, coincidentally, I spotted this car myself and drove 70 miles each way to fetch it.
You would have laughed if you had seen my transport up to Wakefield (where the car was) I went up in a bright orange corsa 1.5td fully kitted out Jap style with racing bucket seats. Ever seen a 49 year old try to climb out of buckets?????????????? not cool, defo not cool!
Now big question for you.... do I keep this handle or create 1 called Mum and let Jay take over Xtremewheels?
