Can someone explain the score with having insurance for one car say a corsa then going to buy another car from a dealers one day (second hand) with the possibilty of p/x and driving back a fair distance.
Also the current insurers are offering a silly price to upgrade the rest of the year with the new car. So you have found a quote cheaper elsewhere for the full year.
Now if you have a quote for the new car do you just phone them up after you have bought the new car miles away from home and are you instantly covered to drive back?.
If the dealer takes your car in p/x do you just cancel the corsa insurance when you get back?
I could be covered third party to drive other cars but this is only for cars not owned by myself or registered to me. Obviously a bit of a flaw as you've just bought a new car and it would technically be yours with the v5 on it's way through.
Anyone know the solution to be insured to drive back in a newly bought car?

ring insurance company, tell them to switch policy to the new car, drive home, cancel policy, get new policy with the cheaper company. job done. you could lose that years no claims bonus and have to pay a cancellation fee though
unlikely you can drive it insured 3rd party as even though the car technically is now yours, it still has to be insured by someone other than yourself to use on the road. I doubt the seller will be happy with that arrangement, especially if its a dealer.

Cheers Dave. I'm not bothered about losing the no claims as I'm on year 10 anyway  . Cancellation fee I undertand and I should get a couple of months cost back.
Switching the new policy might be a pain though as it's a lot more than my current one and looking at about £700 differnce for the rest of the year when I can get a full year for £650.
I might be better using the quote I have for £650 but what I need to really know is are you generally covered instantly when ringing up?.
Can't find out as yet as they're closed.

most companies switch it while you are on the phone. Ive never had a problem. that way you can be covered for the journey home then ring them tell them you didnt end up buying the new car and to switch the policy back over. (as they will usually give you 7 days to pay the extra)
contact the new insurer and get the new policy and then cancel the old one.
all above board and legal, play these insurance companies at their own game

u can allways take out a days insurance for 10 quid from dayinsure.com
