You can get an early S1 elise for around 8.5k
Prob a Cat C/D for the same £££ on an X/Y plate vx220
However, a fair amount of elise/vx owners do a BMW 320(ish) series

e36 m3 - lardy - no fun
Supra twin turbo - lardy no fun
MR2 Turbo- heat lag issues, tyres fry too
Elise- ok - K series issues...lovely if you can deal with those
VX220 subject to availability at Budget - Im biased
have a look >here<
You can go 'racing' not just tracking....and on a budget

as cool as e30 m3s are there just worth too much and i would be so worried about crashing it etc, my mate wanted one but went for an e30 325 sport. with the money left over he fitted better suspension, brakes etc and a 3.5l lump from a 7 series and is looking at supercharging it. with a few tweeks they handle just as well as the m3 and if you go down the same route as my mate then it will be quicker than the e46 m3
