Have to do this at work all the time if the receptionist isn't in or is on the other line.
People ring up wanting to speak to my boss and he will have told us he doesn't want to speak to anyone today so tell them he isn't here.
You can tell the person on the other end of the phone doesn't believe you Hate having to do it cos I'm a crap liar
I presume its not just my boss that does this

mine does it all the time, hes terrible for it! or he'll ask you to send the phone call up to the office, and he just wont answer it, leaves other person on phone for like 10 mins befoie they realise and hang up
he also has a habit of ringing you, and pretending you rang him

Yeah my boss will be chatting away in the background to someone else and I'll be there telling the person on the phone that he is out on site
Or he will tell me that there is only certain peope he wants to speak to like he has done today. So then you have to find out who they are before you decide whether they can speak to him or not.
Today he's said he will take any calls except this one guy that rang earlier before my boss got in. I told him my boss would be later so he's gonna ring back. So now I've got Steve that works on the desk next to me answering the phone incase its the same guy ringing back

I work in tech support - got a call once for one of the 2nd line blokes. He's an arsey bastard so snapped at me telling me "he was in a meeting". Im not his fucking switchboard, so I told the guy on the phone "He doesnt want to speak to you, put ill put you through anyway".
Put him through, and ive never seen anyones face flush up so quickly in my life.
Would never do it to my boss though

I've never lied, I just ask if I can help instead. They normally say yes. I do it even if the boss is available and willing just because I want to know whats going on.
