I've only been driving 6 months but know to take it easy in the wet. Some people just lack common sense.

Good point actually which is another reason why modding your car makes the insurance go up more. It's not just the mod but the way you are more likely to drive to hear the new air filter or to test the new lowered suspension, people seem to forget that.

Here is a little story that might make you think a little, well a few of us on here that have changed anything on our cars anyway.
The DVLA are continuing their crackdown on cars driving illegally on our roads by sticking their nose into the modified car scene. Usually only imported vehicles and dedicated kit cars are subject to an SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) test but now the DVLA propose that all pre 1998 cars that have been 'radically altered from their original condition' will also have to undergo the strict MOT-style inspection. But the trouble arises from what the DVLA interpret as 'radically altered'. Many government departments have different ideas of what it means. Worryingly some believed that "where the original chassis was retained but the appearance changed to a different specification was enough" meaning that a simple bodykit or new alloys could be enough to warrant an extensive SVA. This test would then need to be verified at MoT time to make sure there weren't any undeclared mods.
In addition the new laws state that "all radically altered vehicles and receipts produced to confirm the legitimate purchase of the components; that safety was the main issue" While this may sound sensible, who can say if a particular make of front bumper, is for example 'safe' or not?
Although the proposed change in legislation may take a while to come into action, modifying a car may never be the same again.
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

i reckon accidents in modded cars get a lot of publicity.
plus imagine the scene of an accident with a 40yr old man in a mondeo and an young lad in a modded hot hatch. imagine the mondeo driver falling asleep or somthing and causing a bad crash, everyone that turns up to that scene will take one look at the hot hatch and assume that driver was the cause etc etc.

Yes and no. Plenty of careful drivers out there with modified cars. Most car crashes involve standard cars and regular situations do they not?

As someone said, I think it is bad publicity that modded car drivers get more than anything, although obviously with modded car drivers some have the tendancy to drive more aggressively etc.

top one doesn't look 'modified'
There is alot of arseholes on the road that do not drive to the road conditions....They are everywhere, see them everyday..
ALso common sense shows that if it's been hot then wet = slippy road FFS not rocket science..
Most of the time you can tell what the road surface is like and adjust your driving to suit.
