I'm off to buy a car tomorrow, and non of the cars at this dealership have tax.

I havent got my insurance sorted so i cant tax the car when i get it, but my dad can get trade plates from work which will enable him to drive it back without tax.

When i sign the V5 documents am i ok sign the car in my name as the new owner even though my old man is driving it and it back and it will be insured through his company for the day.....

Tar!

Traders never sign the cars over to them do they? They always remain in the name of the previous owner (at least the ones i have bought have).

I think your right, the previou owner probably got a rebate on the tax. So what your saying is, i can sign the forms when i get home, i wont have to do it there and then i suppose.....

What I meant was, it shouldn't matter who's name the documents are in, as they're never registered to the trader themself anyway. Therefore, your dad'll be fine if it's you who's signed the forms

....also, can you not just give them an extra £60 and say "tax it"

I've done that each time, I wouldn't even take it without tax, just bad practice IMO for the sake of £60

I would but they need the insurance cover note which i havent got as yet so i cant tax it, and if the car is not registered to the garage then they cant tax it iirc.

All seems alright then fingers X!

Nope not anymore, if they have to tax it then they have to register it as their own. I had this with my new car 6 months ago, the guy phoned me and said i could sent my insurance cert for the car to him otherwise he could tax it himself but the car would have another registered keeper (the garage) on the V5
