Right to me this sounds like a very big rip off 
speedo ring has gone on the gearbox so my speedo isnt going to work until it is replaced.
phoned up a gearbox place in paisley and they turned round and quoted me £70 for changing it if i show up and hand them over the box (out of the car).
from what a guy told me on mig it takes about 30mins tops to do this and its only a plastic ring thats being replaced.
so the question is am i being ripped off??

Not really, you are paying them to do a job, thie rlabour rates are probably around £30-£40/hour so you can imagine why it costs a lot.

And you DO NOT want to ever ever ever take a gearbox apart, took me 6 hours of swearing hammering and blood spilling to build my f16/f20 hybrid box. Are you sure its not the speedo drive that the cable screws onto thats fooked, they have a tendancy to shear in two
