Whats the law on having a landline in a house? I always though you needed a working phoneline for emergencies?

I doubt its a law.
You buy new houses with no line.
I think the only law is the provider has to make sure the line is always working.
I have all cordless phones and if power goes I have no phone basically.

I dont think there is a law stating you MUST have a landline...
What do people do who cant afford one?

I don't think it's law at all
Any mobile can always call 999 providing it has a sim in so that covers emergencies.
I didn't used to have a landline in my old flat.

Dom I think if you have a landline they must ensure it always works for emergencys.
I'm not actually sure though.
