I recently decided to have a house alarm fitted and having inspected some "professional" installs, I decided the best thing to do would be fit it myself.
I'm not doubting that a pro would fit to the requriments of the regs.. but I do believe I will make more effort to hide all the cables, and position the components of the system with performance in mind, rather than speed & ease.
Having decided to take on the challenge myself, I set about picking the system. I won't go into what I picked, but the cost of it all is 4 times what my neigbours paid for thier alarms (including installation)
I am covering ALL windows & doors, including both garage doors with contact and/or shock sensors.. and movement sensors in each ground floor room.
The system also has programmable outputs, which I will use to automate the outside lights at night, and possibly use to control the central heating.
Expansion allows full automation of lights & sockets in the house, and remote control via GSM, Internet, dial up etc...
Anyway, here's a quick pic of the front door keypad that I installed last week;

Yeah! and it works the other way too... you can program the system to text or call a list of phone numbers, and it reports if the house is being broken into etc...
Or, you could program it to text you if a certain user accesses the system (each user can have thier own pin no. and it logs all the access)
Another reason for choosing it, is that I can have the garage alarmed seperate to the house i.e. all the time.

On the system I am installing, you can run 88 sensors without doubling up.. i.e. it has the capability of 88 zones.
They can be split into 4 areas, i.e. Upstairs, Downstairs, Garage.. etc which can run independantly of each other.
Each zone can be labelled i.e. "Kitchen Window Shock"; "Lounge PIR".... and the names are displayed on the LCD display, for ease of use.

It can also be set to auto arm by using timers, or events, or a combination of both...

Not going to say what the whole lot cost, but the keypad alone was £150.
I plan to install a secondary one in the master bedroom at some point, but can't decide where the best location is just yet.

Wired mate... hence why I wanted to do it myself.. didn't want any wires showing ANYWHERE!
One of the neighbours alarms cost just over what I paid for the panel alone... and it shows! Wires tacked along walls... wisible door contacts etc..

Which is why I am setting it up to call/text.
I mey even consider remote monitoring/police call out, but I will have to get the installation certified by an installer once I'm done, and I would also have t o surrender all engineer codes & maintanance to them

I just wanted an alarm on the house, as we were the only one on our row without..
I've got a bit of an eye for perfection (however, my car does not reflect this!).. and as stated, this is why I wanted to install it myself.
When it came to picking the system, I spotted the keypad & thought it would look nice & would compliment the tidiness of the installation, but its incompatible with the "basic" or lower end alarms.
Seeing as the alarm allows for so many zones & features, I figured I may aswell use them.
For the time being I will concentrate on just the security aspect, and will start the home automation stuff next year.
I suppose it will be a nice feature for any future buyers if & when I come to move.
