You have to fill in a declaration at the Post Office saying you own the car, which they then send off. I had to once anyway

take the v5, an insurance certificate and the money into the post office.

im buying a car next week that needs a tax disc...... the owners insurance just ran out (car is just in his mums garage at moment).... so he cant go n get the tax disc for me before i come.... so do i need to get insured before i go for the car .. then buy a tax disc whilst im down there? its just that its a 300 miles drive, so i dont want to get insured on it... drive 300 miles then discover the car is fucked lol

can you not get someone who has fully comp insurance and can drive other cars 3rd party only? could go down and they could drive back, then you get insured. 
so i cant tax it without a insurance certificate?
