Right - My car failed an MOT on a clip that holds the CV Gaitor to the hub, and 1 of my 2 registration plate lamps. Fair do's - I took it to the garage that was replacing my water pump ( A different garage to MOT garage) and they fixed it free of charge, took em less than 2 minutes.
I was in the understanding that MOT retests were free. Apparently, now these new computerised certificates are in force, the inspector is supposed to inspect the WHOLE VEHICLE again so the computer wont let you print off a certificate within 20 minutes of the start of the retest (I actually witnessed this for my own eyes). This means that the garage I take my car to were loosing money due to the time it takes for them to be allowed to print the certificate off so they now charge a £22.50 retest fee! It had already cost me £45 for the MOT in the first place.
All this coupled with the fact that the phone lines were down so they couldnt issue me with a certificate anyway! It was a 1 hour round trip and now I have to go back to pick up the certificate when the phones are back on - tomorrow, another 30 minute round trip.
New MOT certificates? Cheers Government, your the shit.
Ben.

the full retest has always been the rule. however not many people adhered to it.
now they have to so they charge. it also never had to be free anyway it was a marketing thing that has been around so long that people expect it.

Yeah the full retest has been the rule - but - now these computerised certificates are in force, garages have to unecessarily wait for 20 minutes before they can even do anything.
Believe me, the garages around here don't know what marketing means, the free retest thing has been pretty much standard thing since i've been taking cars for MOT's anyway. If the government can get another few pennies then that fat arse John Prescott can keep driving big Jags that he doesnt even have to worry about.
Its a farce, im all up for cleaning up the roads and getting the unroadworthy cars off the road, but they are targeting the wrong people.

Well, maybe the garages up in Sheffield are tight but its pretty laid back in this village and for the last 8 years they've been seeing me right.

i may have worded it incorrectly, on the old system everywhere has done free retests, but now the new system is in everywhere now charges for another full test

You dont have to do a full retest. Our garage still doesn't charge for retests. You can do a partial retest for minor items which means you dont have to wait 20 mins. For items such as yours i wouldn,t have doe a full retest unless it was after a week since the original test.

Mine failed on a few minor things....lights, plates wiper etc.
Bloke said 'do you wanna fix them here and now?'
So I walked upto the shops, got the bits and fixed it.
No retest fee required

wouldnt of been able to do a fast track as a cv boot is not classed as a minor item .. can only fast track on tyres, wipers, washers, lights etc cv's/driveshafts somes under part of the suspention and requires a full retest
