There are amps that take a high level output such as the speaker output from a headunit.
There may also be boxes that convert the speaker output to amp level.

you can do it, a lot of amps have speaker level inputs all you do is have some speaker wire running from your headunit to the amp. The problems with it is the quality is poor and it woudl be so much better just to get an aftermarket headunit.

An easier way would be to get a line output convertor. connects to the speaker wires coming out of the headunit and converts the signal to RCA type jacks commonly used.

If you haven't bought your amplifier yet you could get one that accepts speaker level inputs. Just connect directly to headunit and away you go.

Yeah but it's for a sub... I think you'd be pushed to hear distortion unless you drive your subs into clipping anyway...

You will be able to hear distortion. If you have noise coming out of the H/U and you amplify it the noise will get worse, i.e. distortion.
