Karts feel so fast because you're so close to the ground...although obviously I'm not doubting they are fast!

yeah, but thats half the fun, is a cheap form of motorsport, and that is no exageration 0-60 time as its basicly a tuned 125 motorcross engine...

My mates into it, his engine gets rebuilt every few races and I know it isn't cheap, fastest kart I drove was a 50cc one and that was quite rapid

Mates (brothers) are looking at getting back into it properely doing nationals. Decent 2 yr old rotax your looking at a grand then you need trailor or van etc. They both used to race in nationals at school and were pretty good. Never had a go of a rotax had a go of a few though and fuck me they're quick

check for logbok on rotax, look for servicing records and intervals, find out when it was last rebuilt, does the engine have tags on? does it come with spares, what condition is the kart in, chassis and engine, you can generally tell when looking at them if they have had a hard life.
Rotax can be bought for £600 - £2000 so look about.
Sittingbourne is my fav track used to love endurance races there
