What causes the Engine management light to come on which is related to the engine temperature. I've been unable to do the papaerclip test due to this model not capable of doing it (not the right connector pins to support shorting out).
The engine management light comes on when the engine gets hot and on b4 the electric fan kicks in, once the engine has cooled either through driving after fan been on and driving to cool engine OR switch engine off and let it cool - the engine mngt light goes off. If the light hasn't come on whilst driving - switch the engine off when hot and then re-start and guaranteed that the light will be on - drive off, cool things down and off the damn thing goes!

Definately related to the engine temperature. Fan works fine, the temp. guage works fine - basically the light goes out when the engine cools.

When the car is started from cold the light is off, drives nicely but the engine seems to be hunting a bit. Starts perfectly when cold but hesitant when warm/hot. Fuel consumption seems fine to by the way! The car drives pretty poorly when the engine is hot.

I've replaced the Coolant Temperature Sensor and it made no difference - I thought that it was at fault as I had replaced it with a variable resistor and by varying it I could cause the light to go on and off.

UPDATE>>>>>
Now had an MOT and the car sailed through - I was half expecting an emission issue which could have pointed to Lambda sensor (as suggested by a helpful guy on this forum). There were no emission issues when the car was tested hot and cold.

Took it to a mechanic just to get the codes read......

Connected to a fault analyser and these codes were read:
1405A8 - the 'reader used' stated "unknown fault" so gonna ring the analyser supplier monday to see what they say. BUT the Haines manual states P1405 is EGR valve (actual value voltage high/low or open circuit)

Also the coolant temperature was indicated as "43L" !!! not an actual value. I've replaced the coolant temperature sensor so seems odd?

Any ideas???????????
