right i have a dell dimension 1100 pc, and i need to upgrade the ram. there are only two memory slots.... each with 256mb ram to make a total of 512mb RAM. ive heard that filling both memory slots will actually slow down the pc and you wont get anywhere near the performance of the RAM youve installed. is this true? ive tested my pc on crucial.com and the max RAM i can have is 2GB (2x1GB sticks) but i dont want to fill both slots with 1gb of ram if the performance will still be slow (especially when it will cost me £120 for the ram)

fire away chaps

Unless there are specific problems with that board and 2 sticks of ram no it won't slow it down.
Where did you hear that?

put in only 1G stick and see how it does...

but it shouldnt cause any problem, unless they are not of the same exact specifications...

You are specifically supposed to use 2 slots on decent boards for dual channel to make it faster.
I've never heard that.
