http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I know it's an old site but never really knew what to believe.

I know after you've rebuilt an engine you run it in, but say on a new car if you rag it from day one is this guy telling the truth?

he speaketh the truth

if you run a car in HARD, it will make more power, but the engine wont last as long

a lot of motorbikes are caned from the start, cos they dont cover many miles, and the extra power outweighs the rebuild frequency

when i run my new engine in, i will be abusing it, from the start

Well my new piston rings say that you drive from 35 to 55mph but don't stay at same RPM for 20 minutes and drive normally after that!

But yes, when my engine is back together I will give it full throttle at low revs for 20 miles or so, then change the oil.

if u are fitting new con rod bearings at the same time as the rings then try not to labour the engine during the running in. i.e dont drive at low revs with your foot on the floor, just give it as much throttle as it needs.

I would do as Broster. Run in gently and increase revs gradually as the miles clock up.

Rather have a little less power and increased engine life in a road car

my engine has limited life anyway, due to the nature of the engine.... and high revs, but i was advised by the engine builder this was the best way to go...
