Coming home on the motorway today stopped in traffic as per, then out the blue rev limit shoots upto 3k then drops to nothing then stalls. So try and restart but it just sounded like it was flodded. Tried again and was real rough and bumpy then shot out a nasty plume of black smoke from the exhaust. After that it kept idiling at 1k (usually 900) then upon lifting the cluth it would drop the revs almost stall then shoot more black smoke!

Any ideas?

check all the vaccum pies, mainly map sensor. hows it running when stationary?

mate had a similar problem on his a while back, turned out to be the idle control valve. dunno if its that in this case coz dont think he had black smoke.
