This is true, and thank you Jess... I rang them because while out in Leeds it cropped up in conversation... it too 2 minute and 19 seconds for the guy to answer my question, but he did, and t will, 34 people have rang the same factory and asked the same question.... he woiuld not explain the answer as it would have tajen too long, but the plane would have taken off.

ok, the minor details were wrong... all I know is the answer was still the same and I still got hammered... so, lets not be petty about this Chris, go to sleep and get ready for work, Morrisons is needing you

I know it's obvious, but some lesser beings still don't get it, so had to clear it up once and for all

i suspect those that initially believed it wouldn't have taken off had gone so far with their argument that to then change there mind they would have looked very very stupid...so i think everyone got it in the end to be fair.

I still stick by the fact that someone needs to do the maths to find out if the engines are strong enough to get it to the speed for take off whilst compensating for the friction caused by the weight of the plane and gravity.

I have no doubt it'll move, just dont think it'll go fast enough to take off.

Oh, and who did you speak to at Rolls Royce, as I doubt you managed to get through to anyone who had any idea about it...probably just some secretary!

It probly was, but he seemed clued up on this question as I wasn't the first caller, it was a local factory and they work 24/7 there.

Jesus Christ

Gravity acts DOWN and is no different in that scenario, therefore if it takes off normally you may assume that with identical gravity and identical pace it will take off in the question.

We all agree it needs pace in order to generate lift.

The pace is a factor of forces acting to speed up or slow down the plane.

Acting to speed up the plane is a jet engine, power output strong enough propel the heavy plane to speeds required for flight.

Acting to slow the plane is the belt, which is exhibiting a frictional loss on the wheels, which is so marginally tiny its not even going to come close to slowing the plane in any circumstance.

So yes, in spite of the belt the plane can fly.

The question twists it slightly though, and thats why the thread was 30 ish pages when I closed it. It suggests a situation in which the plane and belt are travelling at the same speed, which can be interpretted in two ways.

1. The plane is not actually moving when compared to objects on the ground like buildings, due to the engine thrust being sufficient to keep the plane still on the moving belt but not sufficient to move it forward. In this circumstance, the plane would not take off, as there's no air passing the wings and therefore no lift. HOWEVER, this is actually outside the scope of the question as the plane and belt must travel AT THE SAME SPEED, and in this instance, the plane is basically stopped.

2. The plane is moving with regard to the ground and any particular speed, and the belt is moving in the opposite direction at the same speed. The wheels are spinning really rather quick indeed, but the plane will be free to move as according to my first bit, the loss from the wheels isn't enough to overcome the engines, which push against air anyway. This is within the scope of the question but assumes that you consider the result of the forces acting on the plane, not the speed of both the plane and the belt, which could potentially be equal, but which only would be at very low power.

If that doesn't explain it, buy a book or something. You don't need to do any maths as its not really a mathmatical proof you need as the figures are like engine vs wheel bearings. Clearly engine wins.
