Mum just called to say she can only get 3rd and 4th gear and there is a lot of play in the gear stick

Do you think it sounds like gear linkage??
If so how much to repair and is it common fault??

Hi Kerry, my mate had the same problem with his corsa c and it's a very common problem too. Theres a linkage repair kit available which costs around £13. However it could just be the case the linkage needs re-alligned.

common problem on the corsa c

ive done a few now, in most cases its because the linkage has snapped or is about to snap because its made from plastic (very bad design) new part is about £80 from vaux, but these replacemants are metal.
