I recently sent an email to Starbucks Coffee asking them why their Coffee was so expensive in the UK - I pointed out that a coffee from them in the centre of Manhattan is the same price in Dollars as it is just in Leicester in Pounds. I dont really understand how they can warrant that, hence the email.

I received the reply:

quote:
Dear Mr. Cooksey,

Thank you very much for taking the time to contact Starbucks Coffee Company.

I am sorry that you are disappointed with the current pricing structure of our
food and beverages.

Starbucks' goal is to provide customers with premium coffee and service in an
inviting atmosphere. Unfortunately, many factors go into determining our prices
in the UK, such as property costs, overheads, supplies and our people.

We hope that all our customers find inherent value in the overall Starbucks'
experience, but we acknowledge and thank you for your valuable feedback.

Yours sincerely.

I did drink Starbucks quite a bit in the UK, until I went over the pond and saw how much we were being ripped off, so you're right - I dont drink coffee from Starbucks anymore

but its not just coffee, everything is more expensive than over in the US...CD's, DVD's, clothes, etc. Its just a case of things being more expensive to produce, import and sell over here. Not to mention the strength of the pound which isnt good for people importing goods.

Its just a fact of life over here, nothing any companies can do about it if they still want to make a profit.

Not just the US though - Canada and Australia are also cheaper. I know that in general everything is more here than anywhere else in the world but it was more the specifics of Starbucks I was focussing on because of the huge scale of the post if I had entitled it "Rip Off Britain"

But then I'd ask how often you drink Coffee (not instant) and how much do you enjoy coffee? I must admit, regardless of cost, Starbucks do the best Coffee around. I always drink the fair trade stuff and its hard to beat.

Ben.
