Get either the 1.0 or 1.2 for your first car. Get the same toys but much more sensible on insurance and there is less chance you you wrapping it round a tree or hurting/crashing into other people as you will think your the best driver in the world when you pass your test and will drive like a dick....
so the less powerthe better

1.2 sxi is group 3 and the 1.4 sri is group 5 iirc. Do a quote and see. I've got a 1.4 sri corsa c and it's not a bad car.

Drive both, get a quote on both.
SRi has uprated suspension and handles brilliantly for a standard car IMO. If your getting a later car (2003 52 plate onwards). you gain bigger wheels, Irmscher rear spoiler, different interior to the sxi, different lower front grille, and sports mirrors.
They look pretty sweet as standard, and need very little to make them look really nice.

My car standard except for exhaust and black front grille

In regard to features, what does the SRi have over the exclusiv or vice versa (apart from the leather and climate control)?

I think the 1.4 sri is a decent 1st car if you can afford the insurance..
1.2 sxi aswell is decent..
my father in law has just bought a 1.5 sxi and seems a good car too...
