Can you transfer a plate off without having tax on the car

I know the car has to be MOT'd but unsure about the tax

cool cheers; not sure what i am goin to do with the tax but its out on the cabby 2day and dont wanna loose my p/plate if i dont tax it again as the saxo has 4months tax left on it so may aswell use that for a bit
