the drivers side comes with plastic screw on things, but under the carpet it feels like plan metal (base of the car) so how do i get these silly plastic screw things in the floor?

My car allready had the screw things in the floor when I bought it. When I bought new mats for it I accidently pulled one of the screw things out but it only appeared to be screwed into the carpet. Not directly into the shell at all so I just screwed it back in

basically what I'm saying is that they just screw into the carpet!
