Greg the only reason we wouldn't link Classifieds is because we want it self contained and entirely customised to our needs, with our software...

It will work in a similar way to an auction though (it's being developed as we speak).

i think the only thing you can do is start looking how much you earn from the site, the rate of which people are joining, how much they spend etc and overal looking at how long it will take you to earn back the 2k considering current growth. also you must remmeber(sp) ebay as it is such a huge site. think about how much it means to YOU and think seriously if you can ever make money from it

I agree with everything said on here to some extent. I don't think he should base his opinion solely on whether he can compete with ebay though, that's just unrealistic.

Greg should however have some medium term goals. This is what he should base the decision on. I think everyone on here (including Greg) knows that he will never be able to complete with Ebay, that's a given really. But again that's not the issue.

I think you should review your situation at the end of 2006 Greg, see how many more members you have and whether things are really starting to pick up. If so, stick with it, like you say, the more popular it gets the more members will sign. It's all about taking it one step at a time.

LMAO at "you're not as good as ebay so sell" Neither John or Austin know what Greg wants out of this venture he's got going so how can you even make a well judged comment?

no you're right mate, there is no way UKFlava could compete with Ebay. I'd imagine Greg doesn't have the investment or the resources needed. That's not the issue though and can't be taken into consideration.

just because it can't compete doesn't mean he should sell up.

I think if Greg is to attract business away from sites such as eBay, he needs to differentiate his service, or add value at another stage of the auction process.

Given the choice between two 'normal' auction sites, the average person is more likely to go with eBay.

The eBay/Paypal relationship is a great way for them to provide a complete buy/sell solution, and gives the advantage of brand trust (in addition to their payment protection/insurance schemes).

Maybe Greg just needs to find some other service he can add that is more suited to a smaller site?

totally agree Tim.

Greg, you need to add something totally unique that makes your product/auction stand out from the crowd.

Greg, dont sell it. £2k might seem an attractive offer to you as you come to a time when you could potentially lose your job etc.....

However i say hold out, work at it and you will be ok. You have told me before you do make a bit of extra money through it. Perhaps the extra money you earn you couldput into a seperate bank account to keep re-investing back into UK Flava, this is assuming you dont already do this!

Stick at it Greg I admire your courage to try it and you know this!

I have a few things up my sleeves as some of you know.

With regads to the site something i will be introducing soon is a live auction, very similiar to the count down (digital) so as you watch the screen it counts down (saves re-freshing)

This will also be added to other parts of the auction, "bids" if you are on a page and someone places a bid the number of bids will automatically go up as the bids are placed (no need to re-fresh page again) also the same for the price, as the bids are place (and go up) as does the value, so as your watching the page infront of you the price will go up and up automatically on the page in a digital format.

Ebay annoyed me when i had to keep refreshing all the time so this should be good. (the time left currently does this to give you an idea of what im talking about)

I'm guessing you will be doing this with AJAX? Granted it will help, but it will still be slow when the server is busy.

I guess the bid amount could refresh more often as you get towards the end of the auction? You dont want it to query the db every 5 seconds for everyone when theres 10 days left. If you had 10 people leave a page open thats 2queries a second with nobody actually looking at the website.

I think its done with XMLHTTP, same as Google Suggest.

There were various reasons for not integrating with UKF, not least the disparity between the two marketplaces.

Don't sell it. In the long run 2k is not a massive offer it would be better to suffer in the short term and keep the potetial for benefit in the future imo. Another point would be that it will be something to keep you occupied whilst you are looking for a new job. It may even save your sanity

I still reckon u should sell for £2k. Don't get me wrong its a very good site but you could use the code again and re do the whole site under a better name and have £2k in the bank to use towards advertise it.
It won't take long to get the 490 users to register again.
The site isn't at the point where its too big to re do so imo sell up and start again.
You could use the money to optimize your position in search engines e.g ask etc..
