Ok peeps, I'm gonna ask a question that most of you will know the answer to. It's something that I've never really been fussed about and so have never read anything about it and it is: torque.

My understanding of torque is - more torque, more force and therefore more pull through the gears - is this correct?

Torque is a rotational force. The more torque you have, the faster your car can accelerate. To get more torque you need more BHP.

Look on www.wikipedia.org for a good description.

Thats correct ed

torque is rotational force - pulling power, its good to have a high torque figure but you need a good bhp figure to acheive that torque

Hope that helps!

You could also think of it as a punch.

BHP is how much it can punch and Torque is how fast it can deliver the punches.

surley you can have more torque than bhp, so there for not needing more bhp than torque to go faster

More BHP will give you higher top speeds, more tourqe means you can reach this quicker, tourqe is a by product of BHP and vice versa, N/A Petrol engines gererally have a lower tourqe figure compared to its BHP figure but turboed engines can usually have near identical figures or a much higher tourqe figure to BHP.
Why this is im not 100% sure

think of it this way:

"torque turns the wheels, bhp sells the cars"

basically if you combin what people say you get the answer.

i like to think of it like this:

3 cars;
1) 100bhp 50lbft
2) 50bhp 100lbft
3) 100bhp 100lbft

if they had a race the results will be:
car 3
car 1
car 2

then put them up a steep steep hill and the results will be:

car 3
car 2
car 1

hope that helps....
