Typically 3.5 times your salary. Try any of the big banks, fairly sure Abbey have one.

does it not calculate repayments based on amount borrowed/ payback period?

How much you can borrow depends on the lender. I was being offered silly amounts on online calculators, nowhere near enough. When I had found somewhere and contacted the bank they themselves offered more though.
Mine is with Woolwhich. Northern Rock got close. Abbey were nowhere near.
