basically my missus works at a computer all day, and the company she works for only give her a lunch break.

im sure ive read somewhere that you have to have a break every hour minimum or something if you work on computers all day?
also should she have some sort of filter on her monitor (anti flicker?)?

any help / links to regulations etc greatly appreciated.

she works for private company as an accounts manager and is at her computer nearly all day

according to the 'The Working Time Regulations 1998' a lunch break (providing its at least 30 mins away from her VDU) is all she is 'entitled' to.....

bigger organisations will have a VDU policy - she could have checked with her HR dept. Since its sounds like a smaller company she may be out of luck as there is not legal entitlement to have a break

When I was at college it was a 15 min break every hour - 90 mins, I was doing a IT practitioners course.

I get two 30 minute breaks and an hour for lunch. Work 8:45 - 3:30 but sometimes later.

sounds about right, ive been stuck on this feckin pc all mornin n my eyes and head are killing me !!!!!!!!!

For every four hours worked your entitled to 15 minutes break and a lunch break is 30 minutes but most employers give 30 minutes additional time.

There is no obligation to give a filter for the screen. If she thinks it is damaging her eyes then she can have an eye test and the company will pay for it.

yes the law about only allowed one lunch break applies, but so does the health and safety act, this should be applied in any work place too and there are guidlines for this in the health and safety act

Also make sure your monitor is at least an arms length from you...

If she's having problems with flicker she may want to correct her refresh rate (I know far too many people who run 60Hz which gives me a headache soooo quickly), or possibly request a flat-panel monitor?

yeah 60hz sucks, although most flatscreens run at this, if shes using a crt then tell her to up it to at least 75hz

Yeah, but a flatscreen doesn't scan like a monitor, so doesn't flicker

I set mine to 72Hz, which is widely referred to as "flicker-free"
