You'd be surprised Rob.
Genuine Mexicos go for silly money standard, and proper Grp A and Grp 4 spec shells cost a king's ransom to build.
A good example is Prepfab Motorsport who started with a mint Venetian Red standard flat front shell and built their own BDA powered full house Grp A (or 4, can't remember for sure) tarmac car, in house in their spare time, so everthing was at cost, and they still managed to spend the thick end of 75 grand putting it together.
A decent YBD can be a horrible money pit if you get power mad also.
I've wanted to build a Warrior twin cam or N/A YBD powered RS2000 for years, and priced one up carefully in 1995 and came to the conclusion that it would cost me between £11,700.00 and £15,000.00 to do, depending on the cost of the donor car, and that was ten years ago.
That was sourcing all parts from the cheapest possible outlets, using 2nd hand parts (i.e. block, head etc.) where possible, and doing the bulk of the work myself.
Mine would have had a full cage and Quaife box and diff plus all the other bells a whistles etc etc, but was still a hell of a lot of money, and more than I could afford.
One day though - maybe i'll come into money and build it while sourcing and buying a MK I Mex, a mint RS 500, and a one owner big turbo Escort Cosworth.
