I think if the Soviets attacked the Western Zone in 1945, before the defeat of Japan, it is almost certain the Allies would reform the German Army from the 2 million or more Wehrmacht POWs in their hands. (Not the Waffen-SS POWs though - as die-hard Nazis they wouldn't be trusted.)

The Allies would have no choice - the Americans were heavily committed in the Pacific and British manpower was virtually exhausted. Not to mention the Allied soldiers would be heavily demoralised by a Soviet attack, possibly so badly as the French Army were in 1940.

They'd also have to form a Provisional German government and General Staff to command the Free German Forces. The Allies would have to promise the Germans a united democratic Germany as a reward for fighting on the Allied side - no more division into Western and Eastern zones of occupation.

It would take six months to a year to form up the German POWs into new divisions and equip and train them with Allied weapons and equipment, however.

If the Allies can just hold onto some territory in France, they can reinforce it with a rebuilt German army, and then move onto the offensive in 1946.
