Ive been asked to design a mechanical device that will fit onto the front or rear of a tractor offtake shafts.
I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me any useful info on the conenctions, or know somewhere where i could find such information?

ive googled it but not found much

PTO is usually just like a driveshaft, so design something to take rotational input through a CV joint and make it do...something...

Its usually a splined shaft with different numbers of splines on it depending on hte manufacturer etc. the thing i'd suggest is get your arse down to a local farm machinery supplier and ask them.

im a farmer, well my dad is but cant really help you, all i know is its a drive shaft

is the babe pics in the above garage foxy? as i recognise the lacy pants pic

and that is one mean ass plough and the CAT machine

Power take off - PTO.

Either rotates at 540 or 1000 rpm.

540 rpm design has 6 splines and is 1 3/8" in diameter.

1000 rpm design has either 20 splines and a diameter of 1 3/4" or 21 and a diameter of 1 3/8"

There are also 3 types of coupling.

For my assignment, i have to design a mechanical nut collector/picker which will fit onto either (or both) the front/back of a standard tractor.

For the collection part i am thinking something along these lines:


and for the picking part im thinking along the ideas of vibrating the trunk of the tree with something like this:

Now ive just got the hard part of trying to work out how its going to be powered if possible. Powering all that from a single power take off isnt going to be easy



if anyone has any ideas/suggestions they'd be very welcome!

You would have hydraulic lines available for the jaws and to fold the wings in and out.

The piston arrangement in the middle pic will offer more force to the tree.

To vibrate it a cam would do that ideally spinning at high speeds.

power take off as ian says is either 540 rpm or 1000

use that for rotational and mechanical work

you have spool valves, which you can control the flow to,
range from 4 - 12 dependant on tractor.

there used to lift trailers up, move hedgecutter arms etc

And if you have a hydraulic pump on the machine you can then use them to turn into rotational force etc!

and mertin thats my missus not foxy
