Basically i drilled a hole using the drill bit labeled '4.8'

Been looking around and the width/guage sizes baffle me.

You have sizes ranging from M3 to M12, all i know is the smaller the number the smaller the guage. But what do these number mean exactly and which one should i choose?

Thanks in advance
