....someone a while back said that if u connect the mfd wires up so that the center display is NOT show (i.e the date) then u would get a better radio signal? is this true?

Id vouch for it actually. There is an aerial amplifier fed off the 12v that was cut to your mfd. In places that get a good radio signal its really not needed.
