does it sound like a mechanical whine or a whistle like sound?
check the throttle housing cover (big black thing) as sometimes the rubber seal underneath can blow/leak a little (usually when driving high RPM on the engine, oil surges through the breather line & causes lots of shit) or could just be a vacuum line somewhere round the back (the rubber joints going to the manifold can become brittle/cracked)
if its mechanical, check the dizzy & rotor, sometimes they can be noisy, or as said, could be gearbox, most probably noticible are release bearings... when idling the engine, does the noise come/go depending if the clutch is pressed??

clutch release bearings then!
If it bothers you that much, get a clutch asap, otherwise I would say it wold probably last a few k more (or until it develops into a crunching noise )
I'd certainly budget for it soonish though.

I had these recently but can't remember what it was, though none of the above is what my problem was, took it to vauxhall they fixed it for £90 (part & labour & VAT) though the mechanic said if i left it & it snapped i wouldve lost all power & my brakes wouldnt even work, so get it into your masterfit quick..
