Portsmouth have axed manager Alain Perrin following their poor start to the Premiership season.

The former Marseille boss arrived at Fratton Park in the spring and with the aid David Pleat ensured the club avoided the drop from The Premiership.

He was handed a substantial transfer kitty in the summer by chairman Milan Mandaric, but results have been poor with the club sat just one spot above the drop zone.

Mandaric gave Perrin a stay of execution recently, but it would appear as if Saturday's defeat at Liverpool was the final straw.

The Pompey supremo claims it was a tough decision to axe Perrin but feels the club need fresh input.

"This has not been an easy conclusion to reach," said Mandaric.

"Alain Perrin is a talented coach and a good, honest man who has worked extremely hard since his arrival in the summer. We are all extremely grateful to him for his dedication to the club.

"The view taken, however, is that recent performances and the general morale amongst the squad needed improvement.

"Following a period of thought and consultation with the board, the players, staff and supporters, I have made this decision for the future of Portsmouth football club."

The axe has been hovering over Perrin for some time, with a host of managers linked with the post at Fratton Park, and the rumour mill is certain to crank up a gear.

Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock has been in the frame for some time, while the likes of Alex McLeish, Iain Dowie and even Harry Redknapp have also been linked.

More than happy with that decision. Now Mandaric needs to follow suit

Warnock appears to be the front runner for the vacant position.
