Can anyone recomend anywhere usefull on the internet to teach me a few basic Unix commands?
Basically I can only connect to my storage space on my uni servers using Telnet at the moment so I need to learn how to manipulate the files once i'm there....

The one thing I'm mainly struggling with is copying remote files onto my computer and vice versa...

Is the server not running ftpd? That'll be your easiest way to transfer files.
If not, then is it solely telnet, or do they have SSH available (surprises me if anyone uses non-Kerberised telnet anymore)? If sshd is running you can use 'scp' (Secure copy).
If you don't have any of the above, try rcp (Remote copy). You should be able to find a Windows rcp client on Google...

Yeah, ftpd is the FTP daemon (that's unix-speak for server)...
