i removed the gearstick (easy to do - just remove a pin below gaiter)
then got a big hammer and whacked it off best way i reckon

Lift the gaiter up, undo the pin at the bottom of the stick and remove the stick entirely from the car. Put it in a vice taking care not to damage it, and take a firm grip on the knob and twist.

Easy. No power tools, no mess, doesn't damage anything.

That was also my method. Although mine had already worked loose

Bit disconcerting driving along and going to change gear, only to find your knob's come off in your hand.

(it's annoying when the gear lever falls apart too)

I used mole grips on mine....very effective and never damaged the old knob.
