japan had camera phone's when we were still using poxy shitty nokia 5110's (the brick one)
they make more money this way. What's the point in suddenly giving us a 5 mega pixel phone... When they can sell us a 2mega pixel phone, then later sell us a 3.2 mega pixel phone and then after that sell us a 5 mega pixel - thus selling us 4 phones instead of one.
In japan they need to be at the front of techonology to prove themselves as a brand against the competition, there is no competition over here - so they just give us all the old crap which is better than what we've had before.
We're miles behind in everything techonological ... get used to it. thankfully we've at least started catching up a bit with the internet.
