As above, thinking about getting new car, still want something turboed, but want fairly new eg 01-02 plate, fairly refined.
These are 2 cars that spring to mind, mate has a vrs and i am very impressed with it (even though it is a skoda)!! other mate also has Ibiza which is nice too. Although think i prefer skoda as prefer bigger cars?
Any experience with either good or bad? let me know?

I have a mk3 Ibiza Cupra 1.8 20vT.
As standard they are 156bhp / 160lb/ft, but a remap takes them to 200bhp and 200lb/ft, with no other modifications. Now hits 100 in about 15 seconds.
The Octavia comes with a slightly larger turbo, and i think they remap to about 230bhp and 230lb/ft, but they do have extra weight to pull around.
They dont handle superbly, but probably handle better than the Octavia.
If you are quite tall, you will struggle to fit another adult behind you in the back seat, there is not much room in the back. So the Octavia probably wins on that one.
My Ibiza is quite well built, ive had a saxo and a corsa in the past and its built better than either of them. No rattles or squeks.
Common faults on ANY of the 1.8T 20v range are.... MAF failing and coil packs failing.

If you fancy a slightly larger car than the Ibiza yes. And it looks much better than a Octavia.

to make the ibizas handle alot better you need a strut brace and 15-20mm spacers on the rear and this changes the cars handling alot.

Reet, Having owned a remapped slightly modded ibiza cupra and now have a remapped octavia VRS i feel i can comment.
First of 15 seconds 0-100 im sorry but that is too optimistic, IMO you are looking at high 16`s.
I think ill just run through differences i have actually noticed on the road rather than quoting stats for both cars.
Handling
Ibiza - Standard handling imo is poor by todays hot hatch standards when compared to a 182 etc. As already mentioned the spacers on the rear make a big difference. Suspension mods would be first on my list for the ibiza. Ride quality is appaling on standard suspension.
Octavia - Generally good handling for the size of car that it is but this car is based on the golf/bora platform and thus the handling is not very sharp. You cant throw it around too much although its not as heavy as other cars in its class. body roll is not too bad but the handling is still a little soft although it makes for a good ride.
Engine
Ibiza - These do indeed remap to 200bhp/200;b/ft + but bear in mind these are peak figures. The K03 turbo on the ibiza runs out of steam after 5500 rpm.
Octavia - These remap to about a max of 230bhp on standard cooling/exhaust etc. however it has the K03S turbo which holds the boost right to the redline and doesnt drop of early like the ibiza.
Fuel economy
Ibiza - was averaging 26/7 mpg aroudn town, high 30`s on a run.
Octavia im getting about 22 mpg around town, but its more economical on a run than my ibiza was.
Interior
Ibiza - white dials that glow red look quite good, good interior plastics. unfortunately the seats are awful, about as comfortable as a park bench. although was used to recaros in my veccy and sti impreza seats are comfy also. Big problem for ICE here, the radio is moulded into the climate control console. you have to mount a headunit in glovebox or somewhere simlilar, there is a place in spain where you can send your dash and its modded to have a single din slot but hassle and expensive.
Octavia - superb seats with good adjustment on the drivers, very comfy front and rear. plenty of interior space. Easy to install a headunit. the cream/white cloth on the seats and the cream carpet look mint when clean but get dirty easily.
brakes
Ibiza - very average tbh, certainly not up to the job when the car is remapped. brembos were fitted on teh cupra R as standard, these are £600 but the calipers are chunky so you need to be careful with wheel choice.
Octavia - Very good standard setup, decent sized calipers and discs on front, rear are vented also. Although on remapped car they are only adequate.
Image
Ibiza, imo a very cool looking hot hatch, with a few sublte mods looks awesome. Only thing is this is the one car that everyone tried to race me/sitting on bumper etc
Octavia - big in your face front grille with skoda badge on. Overall the car looks cool and classy but its still plastered in skoda badges which is a problem for some people. Tend to get more respect in this car, people leave it alone etc.
Transmission
Ibiza - Excellent gear box, nice feel to it etc. with short shit it would be perfect. A remapped car really struggles to get the power down, forget it in the wet.
Octavia - feels like it has a longer throw, not the best gear box to rush tbh. Gets the power down a lot better than my ibiza did, but still a lot of torque on a FWD setup. guess i was spoiled by the impreza and its AWD.
I loved my ibiza at the time and only got rid because i moved onto an impreza.
The octavia is what i deem as a sensible car and bought it to save a bit of cash, but overall im impressed with it, very comfortable and in silver its a looker. The ibiza was a lot more fun, but the un precise handling and the problems of getting the power down spoilt it a little. although on a good day a remapped ibiza cupra is a potent little car, until you get heat soak that is.

Wow didnt expect as good a comparison as that seth, cheers, very informative.
Slowly going off the idea of the Ibiza now as want a bigger car really, i too shall be going from 4wd with about 280bhp so well notice the differance, but its a 10 yr old car....so swings and roundabouts.
Basicly want a car thats a bit newer, more refined and most importantly more fuel efficient, think both cars fit the bill.
Wondered what the deal was with the stereo in the ibiza, strange you cant remove it!!
Am also thinking along the lines of astra coupe turbo now too, not sure if this is in the same class as the above 2 cars? specs sound quite similar on the whole, think i well have to keep researching.
once again cheers for info, especially seth

Octavia are good value for money. 180bhp as standard. can be tuned up pritty easy as all turbos. ibiza are 225bhp as standard i think? it depends what u want ? take both out for a test drive? Octavia slighty more bigger. The Police Tend to be using them all round the uk now. becuase there quick cheap and got good space. I do like the ibiza. but been in a octavia and like them aswell. all i can say is take them both out for a test drive and see what u think? black skoda with slight tints would look mint though if youve got enough cash. the best 20v turbo engined car has got to be the S3. ive driven one of these and these are the bollocks! look mint, 4wd 225bhp audi says it all

craigos i think you are referring to the leon cupra R when you say 225BHP. The ibiza cupra is 156 bhp and the cupra R is 180.
Id love an S3 also but you are talking 6-7k for a decent octavia vrs or ibiza cupra. S3 looking more at 9-11k? bit of difference lol.
