i need to back up between 40 and 100 gig of data from the pc, just incase the one with it all on goes missing or tits up

whats the best way and safest?

normal hard drive (take leave in work pc)

You could get a 100gig harddrive for pennys.
Doesn't even need to be external.
Just connect it when needed.

Do you mean about 20 when you say a couple?
Still cheap though I suppose as dvd's don't cost much now.
