depth of field (DOF) describes the area of the pgoto that is in focus. the area's out of focus is called Bokeh. DOF is a major area of photography and selectively using small or large DOF makes or breaks a photo. to control DOF we use aperture. standard apertures run

big - f1.4, f1.8, f2, f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, f10, f14 - small. each one effectively halfs the shutter speed as you go up the scale (but smaller aperture)

DOF is greater the closer you are to a subject with the same aperture.

f1.4

f2.0

f2.8

f5.6

f11

f16

close f1.4

far f1.4
