Just look for oil leaks and the usual smokey start up etc. Mayo in the water and round the oil filler. They are generally pretty reliable but are all getting on a bit now, most of the top ends are noisy but quieten down when warm (sounds a bit like a skeleton having a wank in a biscuit tin!)

Why not go for the 2 litre Ecotec version? Not as old etc etc and it wont take much to retrieve the 13 or so lost ponies either!!!
