got buyer of a car, and he is going to give me a deposit, and pay for the rest of it when he collects the car in a few weeks time. he wants me to send the new keeper part of the V5 to him, but i keep the bit which you send to the DVLA. can he do anything with this part like say the car is his or something

You should not send the V5 form off till he has paid for the car in full...

Otherwise he could claim the car as his own...

You need to give him section 10 think it is of the V5 and retain the rest yourself...to which you send to the DVLA yourself...

Tell him to wait until its paid in full. If he's genuine, he won't mind.

DO not give him section 10 untill he has paid in full...its effectively saying the cars his already before he has paid...

You would not give him the keys before he has paid in full...same thing really..

what if i put the date of transfer as to when he will be paying the rest?

And he never pays the rest?

or.... make him send u a document, saying he owes u this much, hes paid this much, and the car still belongs to you until you have receipt for the full amount. However he has the other bit of V5 for reference use and nothing more. At this stage he does not own the car. Signed and Dated.

Until you receive this, do not send him that V5 bit.
