I did a post about this the other day. I am doing some work in telecoms at the mo and its a real problem with bills up to £10k!!!
Check your internet connections thingy for a dialler and if there is on there, delete it.
Also, asking your provider to block premium numbers and calls to Pakistan/Nigeria might help.

no, the filter connected to the phone line is a different type of signal to ordinary analog type data, therefore a dialer cannot utilise it

Yes. Its a dialler thats put on your machine so even if you're on broadband it still dials up. To avoid the prob just unplug the phone line when your not at your comp. If it happens whilst you're there obviously you'll know as it'll make the dial up sound.

no the dialer cannot connect, the data type is digital, the only type of dialer that could do such a thing would be some kind of dialer that uses voice over ip technology, which im pretty sure dont exist

If you have broadband, you don't dial a number so no call charges, your connection is usually authenticated just by user/pass and sometimes your own phone number id so you can't share bb account.
Safer option is to connect to bb using a router and then computer connects to router on local network. That way you don't even need modem/terminal adapter in the computer and even if you get a dialler installed there's no hardware for it to use.
Lot safer for incoming connections etc. as well, I would never personally not use a router, even in single PC setups.

Hiya mate, same happened to my dad, after few arguments with BT about them, they admitted that they are not allowed to be connected for a certain amount (premium rates) they said pay half to pay the company and BT would fortget there money, my dad knocked it off phone bill (the whole lot £250 odd) and had few more arguments with BT before they let him off.
Mind you i think this must have happend a lot as BT have ads in paper advertisin ther anti dialler software.
if i was you i would ring em and play hell about em.. u will prob av to pay half then.
