http://www.postandcolumn.co.uk/jerol.htm

I work for Hertfordshire Highways road safety team, and we have just recieved details of these new Lamp columns designed to crumple upon impact....

take a look at the photos at the bottom of the page... you wouldnt expect that to happen if you hit a lighting column at 100mph!!

We will definitely be seeing more of these I reckon!

that sounds like a pretty good idea, but what about all the power and wires inside them?

I remembetr seeing these on Fifth Gear not so long ago. The designer just drove into one at about 50mph with no special safety features he was that confident of it.

Good idea if you ask me

Surely If its crumnpling on impact, then its active road saftey? Passive would be lights that are very bright, so avoid the accidents in the first place? .

Deffinatly a good idea, although i did think that current metal posts had to give a certain amount, hence the reason why they were all put in to replace the concrete ones .

They called it passive.. not me

current metal posts have no real absorbtion properties... just usual mild steel properties... Ie. not very bendy

This company have also produced Lattix sign posts, which are basically criss cross steel posts made up of little strands rather than one thick one... so when you twat it it just crumples!

All good stuff IMO, can deffo see it saving a few lives!

oh, and its 100kmph not mph

still, hitting a steel post at 60mph you would expect a total wreck of a car

I would prefer it to stay where it is when I'm out in the convertible. Would be nice to uproot if for the forward impact, until it hits you on the head.

The one shown in the 5th Gear test shattered the BACK window when it folded over......while it might not be peppering you in the face with glass, it's going to cause some damage to someone sitting in the back!
