50,000 people die each day and we want to stop this.

what i would like to know is, at the end of a day you've saved 50,000, so tomorrow them people will need houses/food/water/clothes/education/medicine etc, and u only got 1 night to sort them out because tomorrow there's another 50,000 coming that need the same

thats an increase of 18.25million people a year

50,000 people doesn't seem right to me, i can't get my head round that

I have split opnions on this, in one hand I think we need to do something, on the other I think that we managed to pull ourselves out of caves and invent the wheel, and make fire without aid from anyone whats different?

I just think they have become complacent and just EXPECT us to help them now.

There leaders are all corrupt and give any of them the smallest amount of power they become greedy and take advantage.

I just think Africa is beyond OUR help and needs to help itself, and until they can do that they are FCUKED.

I think we should have a CS Concert to raise awareness of the USA. Every three seconds, another dumb yank is born, this is unnacceptable, we have the power to change it. Together, let's make a stand, let's "Make America History".

Was surrounded by dumb mother fcuking americans whilst on holiday.

They were diving off of this small hut near the swimming pool when it clearly said "
"no diving"

when i had a go one (there were little kids in the pool as well) one of them said 'it doesn't say no diving off the hut though does it?'

they think that by making a show of themselves they look all cool in front of people when really they are doing nothing to improve people's views on their kind.

TBH I think thats the point now... they want to help them help themselves with trade agreements etc BUT how are they gonna do that when AFrica is likely to provide shoddy products at a more expensive price than locally sourced goods... I can't see how this will happen... I think the only way is for an India style system where companies locate out there but then these people can't do anything they want them to do... is a tricky one for sure but at least this MPH thing is doing some good... they are only cutting debt /increaseing aid to those countries which prove they arent corrupt etc

it didn't work 20years ago, and i reckon its not gonna work this time round either

cutting the debt is a good thing, but stopping them dying could result in a buibonic plague from over population

You have a point Robbo, but I for one an a optimist!

We have to remember that the nations in Africa vary tremendously, some have more skilled workforces than others etc.

The nations with more developed workforces and the better investment climates in which to conduct business (e.g Kenya, South Africa) really need to attempt to attract foreign business and increase trade, hopefully this will have a spillover effect in the long in terms of jobs, supporting business opportunities etc etc etc. These nations have the potential to become export competitive.

However, the poorest counties need to build up local industries further before they think trade measures, governments need to subsidise local business and assist in building market infrastructure, which takes time and money, which needs to be distributed in the right places.

Building domestic business under protection from foreign business will allow firms in Africa to develop business skills and will be a prerequisite to opening up to trade. This process will eventually allow Africa to become a hub for production of foreign goods, it will just take time.

Cancelling debt will help as this will free up capital to be distributed further to build up functions to support business such as property rights, legal systems, corporate governance and so on, and to provide incentives for foreign firms to invest. Additonally, improvements in banking will allow development of small businesses.

Investments in education, infrastructure and the above will take years and years, but trade will increase as the workforce becomes more skilled and the investment climate improves.

Remember nations in South East Asia and South America were once in a similar situation, and have come leaps and bounds.

All it needs is direction and support from developed nations in terms of advice and aid, and methods to allow people in Africa to engage in economic activity. Also a reduction in corruption will allow money to be distributed to where it counts- education, infrastructure etc. Most of all it needs time.
