Obviously you should never put your car into reverse while moving, or you'll hear that loud "crunccchh" and probably mash up your gears. Right, well. Mine has started doing it from stationary (on odd occasions). Like today, i went to watch war of the worlds (class film, but anyway) and when i came back to my car 2 hours later, i started it, put the clutch right down (i still had the handbrake up) and it crunched.

Any ideas whats wrong, or is my gearbox on its way out?

the syncro? maybe put the clutch down and lift it back up with the engine running.....then put it down again and try and go for reverse....

or is it possibly the selector?

did you put it in reverse straight away? mine normally does this if i put it in gear straight away, now i wait a few secs for the revs to calm down and its spot in, also try putting it in more slowly

Ah i guess you're right. But if the clutch is down, surely it shouldnt be affected? Saying that though, with that priciple, you should be able to put in reverse while you're moving, but we all know you cant

Thanks for the replies

On the Saxo you have to put it into reverse really slowerly or you get that mad crunch noise Sometimes it won't even go into reverse, you have to bring the clutch up and then back down again for it to go in. Well at least it works, on the 106 -- one time i had to get out and push it back
