As above.
My mum has forgotten the logon password for one of her works laptops. Luckily, there is no work on there that she needs anyway, but is there any way around it? Would I be able to format the harddisk and install a fresh copy of XP instead?
Any suggestions

As long as the laptop supports Boot from CD you can boot with the XP CD and format/install from there.
You may have to go into the boot menu when you turn it on, or change priority of boot devices in the BIOS.

If its not a easy password to guess then your stuck, apart from getting a cd that will allow you to hack the password by moddifying the SAM.
It looks complicated but its really not that bad, just look at this site - http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ where you can download a CD image and make a CD the follow the instructions on that site and it will allow you to change the password.

You said it was a work PC, then reinstalling the OS might not be the best idea, can't she just get the password reset next time she's at work?
