Banbury in?

guy on the phone said its in OXON, but ive never heard of a county called OXON

and the postcode is OX17 3ZJ

so is banbury in oxon ?

Oxon is short for Oxfordshire, just like Hants = Hampshire, Northants = Northamptonshire, etc.

Why is that anyway?

Oxon is nothing like Oxfordshire, except for the OX part obviously. Same for Hants meaning Hampshire.

Bucks meaning Buckinghamshire makes sense.

It's pronounced Oxford. Anyone who pronounces it as Ox-fud is a country bumpkin IMO.

I was having this same conversation with the guy I sit next to at work. We couldn't work it out either, got bored and started talking about PS2 games instead...

As a Geordie, i pronounce it as Oxfadshia.
